Safe Routes 2 School

A hands on program to encourage walking and biking to to school.

Bike to School Day

Michigan’s Safe Routes to School (SR2S) Program is encouraging schools to take part in the second annual National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Bike to School Day builds on the popularity and success of International Walk to School Day, an event celebrated around the world since 1997. More than 4,000 schools nationally participated in Walk to School Day in October 2012, including 222 in the State of Michigan alone. Both Walk to School Day and Bike to School Day are great ways to bring community leaders, parent, students and other stakeholders together to build awareness for communities to be more walkable and bikeable.

We are encouraging schools across Michigan to join the Bike to School Day celebration by planning a bike-focused event on May 8. If the May 8 date doesn’t work for your school, simply choose another date; the entire month of May is National Bike Month. Many schools are already planning special activities in May such as All Children Exercising Simultaneously (ACES) Day. If your school participates in ACES Day, consider adding Bike to School Day to your ACES festivities; it’s another fun way to demonstrate the importance and benefits of daily physical activity. Schools that prohibit biking are encouraged to hold a Walk to School Day event instead.

Register your school to receive free event planning and promotional materials along with technical support from the Safe Routes to School office. We also encourage schools to download materials from the National Bike to School Day website at www.walktoschool.org.
