Safe Routes to School Low-Income Resource Guide Now Available
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership’s new publication: Implementing Safe Routes to School in Low-Income Schools and Communities: A Resource Guide for Volunteers and Professionals, addresses several common barriers to safe walking and bicycling on school routes:

   Crime and violence (personal safety).
   Awareness and attitudes (community readiness).
   A shortage of professional expertise.
   Limited parental involvement.
The barrier of distance to school.
Traffic safety and the built environment.

Children in low-income areas are twice as likely to walk to school, but face higher rates of pedestrian-related injuries and fatalities. The Guide features more than 20 low-income school communities, including Detroit and Highland Park, Michigan.
